Analysis of Absenteeism and Accidents among Primary School Children

Abstract
This analysis was based on the prospective survey on school accidents among 13,524 children in 5 primary schools and on absenteeism among 2,851 children in one of the above 5 schools located in Taejon city. The duration of the survey was actually 69 school days from May 1, 1977 to July 31, 1977. Findings from this analysis were summarized as follows:
1. There were 5.4 absences /1,000 pupil days, among which 79.5% were accounted for medical
reasons.
2. The rate_ of absence was calculated as 4.3 events per 1,000 pupil days and of school days lost was 6.0 days per 1,000 pupil days. The highest rates of both were observed among third or fourth year students.
3. The rates of absence were 3.9 events per 1,000 pupil days and 4.7 events per 17 000 pupil days for boys and girls, respectively.
4. The major causes of absence by medical reason were respiratory and digestive diseases and accidents,¢¥
5. The frequency of student accidents was calculated as 63.8 events 100,000 pupil days, 74.1 for boys, and 52.4 for girls.
6. Accidents were most frequent among fourth year students and less frequent among lower grade students.
7. The most frequent location of student accidents was school plant (48, 9%) followed by class room (37.0%)
8., The frequent types of student accidents included perforation and piercing, collision and fall
with those order. Most of injuries resulted from accidents were minor injuries such as abrasion, simple open wound or contusion. Less than 6 percent of injuries were severe cases.
9. The student accidents seemed to be most frequent on Monday or around noon time. 10. More than 96% of student accidents required one day or less of treatment.
